FAQ’s

  • How do I know if I have myomas (fibroids)?

If you have any of these symptoms, ask your doctor:
    • Painful and prolonged menstrual periods.
    • Pressure or discomfort in the pelvic area.
    • Bladder problems. A need to urinate very frequently.
    • Pelvic pain.
    • Low-back pain.
    • Pressure on your rectum.
    • Discomfort or pain with sexual intercourse.
    • The volume of your abdomen has expanded.
    • Difficulty in becoming pregnant and miscarriages.
Your doctor will tell you if you need an ultrasound scan, through the vagina or from the outside through the abdomen, or a pelvic MRI scan with contrast, to confirm whether or not you have fibroids.

  • How do I know if I can have HIFU treatment?

To know whether you are a suitable candidate for HIFU treatment, our medical team will need a transvaginal and/or an abdominal ultrasound, as well as a pelvic MRI with contrast to assess the number, size, volume and location of the fibroids. If you have any questions, please send us an e-mail at info@myomainstitute.com or call us on 900-649-305.

  • What happens to the fibroid after the treatment?

After the treatment, the body will reabsorb the treated fibroid tissue.

  • What is HIFU treatment?

HIFU is a non-invasive treatment. No incisions are necessary. The doctor will only apply ultrasound to raise the temperature of the fibroid, thereby destroying its cells.

  • Will I be put to sleep for the treatment?

You will not be given a general anaesthetic. You will only be sedated to make you more relaxed and so you feel less discomfort. You will be conscious the whole time.

  • What is the recovery like?

The treatment is done as an outpatient procedure and you can go home a few hours afterwards. The next day you can carry on as normal.

  • How soon do symptoms go away after treatment?

Some patients notice an immediate improvement, but it is usual for them to go away gradually over the following months.

  • Will my periods go back to normal after HIFU treatment?

If everything goes as expected, your periods will return to normal after 3 to 6 months. You will stop having heavy bleeding and severe pain.

  • Can I get pregnant after the treatment?

As soon as our team is sure that your recovery has progressed as expected, you can try for a baby. This usually happens in less than six months. We have already seen 13 births by mothers who had HIFU treatment with us.

  • Could I have fibroids again, after having HIFU treatment?

The possibility exists – and if the new fibroids cause symptoms, they should also be treated. This can happen after any of the treatments, except for a hysterectomy, since the uterus is removed.
