How does HIFU work?

  • Treatment with HIFU does not need anaesthetic.
  • It is carried out under conscious sedation to reduce discomfort.
  • The patient lies face down on an operating table with her head to one side.
  • The medical team is with the patient, closely following her reactions and comments.

The doctor uses ultrasound or MRI to identify where the fibroids are. Then the HIFU treatment generates high-intensity ultrasound waves which heat a small spot in the uterine fibroid to a temperature over 55°C for a few seconds. The real-time monitoring allows immediate evaluation and control of the changes in the tissue.

The procedure lasts between half an hour and three hours, depending on the size and number of fibroids to be treated.

The patient treated with HIFU can resume normal activities in just a few hours, when the mild sedation effects wear off.
